New Tenant at Ladybower

The tenancy at Ladybower has been taken over by a local angler. Those who have fished Ladybower over the last few seasons have noticed a decline in the quality of the fishing. Hopefully now a new tenant has been installed we will see the a return to the glory days for this stunning fishery. More details to follow……

Cotton’s Fishing House no longer on Peak Passport

Fishing on the hallowed stretch of the Dove where Charles Cotton built his shrine to Isaac Walton is no longer available on the Peak Passport. It’s a shame fishing is no longer allowed on this stretch of water, however rest assured the Trent Rivers Trust will be looking for suitable alternatives.

New Stillwater Fly Selection

Our fly selections have really been a hit over the last year.  Newcomers to the sport often find it difficult to chose the right flies for the right situations and often waste unnecessary money on the wrong flies.  For the start of the Stillwater season we have developed our Stillwater selection.  Containing 16 flies comprising of 8 different patterns all are proven fish catchers leaving you in no doubt that you have the right flies on the end of your line.  To keep your flies in order we have included a 12 compartment clear fly box.  This sturdy little fly box will fit in the top pocket of your fishing vest or inside a coat pocket.

The selection covers all situations allowing you to fish the washing line method, New Zealand Style droppers, dries, and deep fished buzzers. It also allows you to cover all the different layers of the water to find the feeding fish.

Our selection includes the following :

1 x 12 compartment Myran fly box

2 x Cat Straggle Lure

2 x Cactus Orange Booby

2 x Diawl Bach Nymph

2 x Shipman’s Buzzer Black

2 x Sedgehog Olive

2 x Black Holo Snatcher

2 x Epoxy Buzzer Black

2 x M’s Damsel Nymph

Conclusion:

These are the outline topic for the first weeks of the course.

Other topics to be covered are  Deer hair flies (spinning and stacking) and using “CDC” for wonderful buoyant and simple dry flies.

There is some space left free for any aspects students want to look at , fishing techniques for example and the course does include a chance to put some of our flies to the test on a field trip.

Cost of day permit not included, but a bit of casting tuition is.

Some of the students on the course have been for several years now and are pretty good fly dressers. They come because it just fills a gap during the run up to the new season and “ there’s not much on telly!

We look forward to meeting old hands and newcomers in a relaxed  atmosphere and a chance to catch up on some fishing gossip.

This little course is for like minded anglers who wish to brush up on fly dressing techniques. It is not for expert fly dressers but at least some previous experience is desirable. Knowing how to put a hook in vice or at least knowing what a hook and a vice actually is for example.

Derbyshire Angler Catches World Record Bass

Derbyshire Angler Catches World Record Fish

Derbyshire angler Simon Brough recently caught a potential world line class record Small Mouthed Bass.  Simon caught the monster fish while on a fly fishing trip fishing for Muskie on the Chippewa River.  The fish measured 22 inches long and was a shade under 7lb.

Simon adds “It was the second day of my trip.  I had already caught some nice Muskie and Bass on the first day.  I made a cast onto the edge of a crease where the fast water met a back eddy and the fish hit straight away.  When I got the fish to the boat local guide Don Larson couldn’t believe the size of the Bass.  We measured the fish and Don really wanted me to put a claim in for the 20lb world line class record.  To be honest it didn’t really register with me what I’d caught as I was there to catch Muskie, but Don was whooping and a hollering as he’d never seen a Bass of that size caught on the Chippewa.”

The fish was caught on a 9′ 10 weight Greys GS2 rod and a Rio Outbound Short  10 weight floating line.

Simon manages internet retail sales at Bakewell Fly Fishing Shop and can be contacted at simon@bakewellflyfishing.com
